Who we are:
Midnight Coil Repair provides repair services for Model T Ford ignition coils and other jump-spark "buzz" or "trembler" style coils used in early ignition systems from the dawn of the internal combustion engine to the late 1920s.
What we do:
We can repair your original 1913-27 Model T wood box coils, including capacitor replacement, restoration of wood components, points replacement / rebuilding / reproduction, and tuning services. Model T Ford coils are a specialty, including 1911-1912 Heinze Ignition Coils.
Quality:
Midnight Coil Repair is committed to making your car or engine run the best it possibly can. To that end, we've worked with engineers, drivers, and competition-based activities to hone the process of coil repair and tuning to provide durability, performance, and visual authenticity / quality. Every facet of coil restoration, from capacitor selection, hardware choice and installation to tuning and break-in has been thoroughly researched and considered to provide reliable performance. These results were proven in 2023 when a set of MCR built coils powered the first place finisher in the Montana 500, an endurance run held annually for over 50 years. Larry Azevedo, past national president of the Model T Ford Club of America, piloted his car at an average speed of 54.6 MPH for 433 miles to take the trophy in a 1925 Model T Roadster using completely stock Ford components.
Process:
Every coil has its secondary winding evaluated to make sure the coil is properly rebuildable. After being deemed rebuildable, the coil will have its capacitor replaced, with all joints soldered carefully and tested for cold joints. The case will be reglued as necessary. The coil will have fresh Type III Steep roofing tar poured in to secure and insulate the components. Coils are then stripped, the tops painted with an appropriate flat black paint. All steel hardware posts are thoroughly cleaned for optimal conductivity. New brass hardware is installed. New points are set, properly adjusted with cushion spring travel and tension set, and then are adjusted on the Electronically Cranked Coil Tester (www.modeltecct.com). Coils are then run on a break-in rig that uses Model T components including a timer and coil box, which simulates a running speed of 35 MPH. The coils are run for 30 minutes, then allowed to sit overnight, and are reset on the ECCT. More than 95% of coils leave rating "Excellent," with spark times occuring 95-100% time at a 1.9ms ramp-to-fire time.
